What’s double-cleansing?
Double-cleansing, cleansing cloth, are you lost with all things cleansing? Don’t be, we’ve got you covered. Here’s all you need to know about double-cleansing like a pro to keep pimples at bay.
Firstly, let’s go back to basics: thorough cleansing is super important.
For many people, cleansing means a quick face wash in the shower. That’s ok. But if you want your skin to look healthy and to glow, a little extra love and attention goes a long way.
When you cleanse your skin at night, you wash away all the bacteria and dirt that your skin has collected throughout the day (even if you can’t see it, dust and pollution particles pile up on your skin all day long). It’s a key step that all skincare pros tell you to never skip because it keeps your skin healthy. When your skin is healthy, not only it looks better but your body feels better too.
Why? Your skin is your largest organ, it regulates your body temperature and protects all your other internal organs, so keeping it in top form is an important habit.
Ok, so what about double-cleansing?
Like a double ice cream, it’s double the goodness of cleansing. Double cleansing has been part of the traditional Japanese beauty routine for centuries, so it is nothing new. The idea is that the first cleansing step removes make-up or the day’s grime (like pollution, sweat, sunscreen) with an oil-based cleanser, and the second step deep cleanses your skin with a water-based cleanser so there’s no bacteria stuck in your pores (the tiny air shafts of your skin that look like teeny holes). You know what it means: no bacteria trapped, no pimple.
How to do it:
- Start this relaxing ritual by rubbing your clean hands together so they are warm when you touch your face.
- Apply a dollop of oil-based or your regular cleanser to your fingertips.
- Massage in your cleanser to your whole face and neck (bacteria gets trapped under your chin too). Apply your product from the center of your face towards the edges, always in a circular motion to activate your face’s blood circulation (it brings oxygen to your skin cells so they’re working even more efficiently).
- Rinse off with warm water using a muslin cloth to get rid of all the grime.
- Repeat step one either with the same face wash or using a water-based cleanser.
- Rinse off. Your skin is all clean and ready to absorb the goodness of your moisturiser.
Why using a muslin cloth is a good idea.
Wiping off your cleanser with a natural cotton cloth is a gentle way to lift off all the dead skin cells and grime that lay on the surface of your skin and clog your pores. It sloughs off all the grime but unlike harsher face scrubs, it doesn’t irritate your skin, so it is perfect for sensitive and young skin This is the reason we had to make our Fancy Cloths for you. They are the perfect size for your face and a lot more efficient than splashing water on your face – and all over the bathroom floor! Make sure you use a clean cloth every night though, because you know what happens with bacteria: it loves to create pimples.
Do I have to use two different cleansers?
No, you don’t. We’ve created a soothing cream cleanser that deeply cleanses without stripping your skin from its good, protective oil. It’s nourishing too so massaging in your cleanser before rinsing it off will not only make you feel great but also plump up your skin with vitamin C and other effective ingredients to keep your skin healthy.
Is it possible to over-cleanse your face?
Yes, it is. This is why most dermatologists (your skin doctor) recommend that you double-cleanse at night only. But don’t stress, if you’ve done a good job at night (and if you read this, you will have), you should only need a short face wash in the morning.
Can I use a wipe to clean my face?
We bet you know the answer already. Single use wipes are neither good for the environment nor your face, so stick to a natural, 100% cotton muslin cloth instead.
