Riding the Waves of Success: Sky’s Inspiring Surf Journey
At Evre, we believe in celebrating girls who are carving their own paths, inspiring others, and embracing confidence in their own skin. Sky is the founder of Sky’s Surf School in Northland, New Zealand and is just that. She is an entrepreneur, athlete, and mentor who is making waves in the world of surfing. Her journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of believing in yourself. We had the privilege of catching up with Sky to learn more about her journey…
What inspired you to start your surf business, and what was the first step you took to make it happen?
“I was inspired to start Sky’s Surf School through my love for surfing and my experiences as a female surfer in Northland NZ. The first step I took to starting my business was taking up a business class in yr 12 at High School. I made a post on the Kerikeri Noticeboard to suss how many people in my community would be interested and then it was in this class that Sky’s Surf School was launched”.
How has growing up in New Zealand influenced your business and brand identity?
“Growing up in New Zealand has been so special to me and has really influenced my mahi and the entire identity of Sky’s Surf School. I was inspired by my childhood and upbringing in the ocean and with a coastal lifestyle, I wanted to share these experiences and opportunities with other girls”.
When did you first start surfing, and how has it shaped who you are today?
“I first started surfing when I was 8. I grew up at a little beach in Northland called Tapuaetahi and spent most of my childhood in the water surfing, paddle boarding, snorkeling, fishing, etc. I spent my high school years competing in Scholastic competitions and events around New Zealand. More than anything surfing was a ‘happy place’ for me, spending endless amounts of time in the ocean in beautiful locations both in NZ and overseas, it has inspired me to travel and has been how I have made many awesome connections and friendships over the years”.
What’s your favourite surf spot in New Zealand, and why?
“My favourite surf spot in NZ is a break at home called Stubbies… It's my favourite because I have soooo many happy memories here and nothing beats a surf at your home break”.
Can you share a memorable moment from your surfing journey?
“A memorable moment for me was travelling to Indonesia with my Dad on a surf trip when I was 14. This was my first time travelling out of NZ and experiencing the beauty of surf, travel and culture in a new place. We had so many good surfs in beautiful warm water with perfect waves. Since then we have travelled back to the same place with my whole whanau and it holds very special memories for all of us”.
How do you balance running a business with finding time to surf and enjoy life?
“Balancing my time is definitely the most tricky part about running a business. I am still working on improving this!! I feel like being clear on ‘boundaries’ and giving 100% energy when I am ‘working’ and then 100% energy to relaxing and not working during my ‘time off’ has really helped with this. Focusing on being really present with whatever it is I am doing or focusing on”.
What advice would you give to young girls wanting to get into surfing?
“I would say be really consistent!! Keep turning up for yourself. The cool thing about surfing is that it is so fun at any level / ability so the learning process is really awesome and enjoyable”.
What’s your go-to surf playlist or favourite song to listen to before hitting the waves?
“My go-to pre-surf song would be “Send Me on My Way” - Rusted Root … or anything Taylor Swift”.
Who inspires you, either in surfing or in business?
“My little sister Gracey. She’s the most kind, cool, talented, confident and happy person I know. She inspires me to challenge myself, to be present and to maximise my potential with every opportunity. Gracey is an incredible surfer and a huge inspiration to me in every aspect of life. I hope to be as cool as her one day!”
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Never make a decision based on fear” - Dad
“This has been really valuable advice for me that I have held onto forever!! It is very easy to make a decision based on our fear of what people might think of us, fear of being embarrassed, fear of consequences etc… But I think it's really important to step outside our comfort zones and push ourselves to be better and it's really hard to do this if we are focusing too much on ‘what if’”.
